Murals under the Highway
Going to see the murals and critique them was a great experience.
The class was looking at the murals and we answered questions about what they meant, what and how was the Chicana imprinted in the murals? Some of the murals had a Chicana meaning and others were structurally painted to represent the influences of our history, our religious beliefs, and a new identity being a Mexican American in the US. Being a Mexican American and also born and raised here in a border city, I saw in the murals the authenticity of our community. There was a mural with the building of the EPCC, but I did not see one of UTEP. I saw a brown female with the center of the Aztec calendar in her stomach. The same sign was in her head. When we were in the restaurant talking about the murals more in detail we kept learning the meaning of the center of the X of Juarez. It represented the same figure the female had in her stomach.
This figure it represents the center of the Aztec calendar. The Aztecs guided themselves to pin point accuracy in time and in celestial space and they had this calculations registered in their Aztec calendar. It was nice to see that this mural of this brown female had all the sciences and wisdom in the sign in her stomach and head.
Chicanas were well represented in the murals. There was one in the river in between Juarez and El Paso and the bridge behind her, another mural had a naked woman on top of Tenochtitlan pyramid and she was giving corn to birth. Its obvious that when we see this murals they represent the warmth and power of our mothers. They always had a warm plate of food for us and definitely they were on top of what ever mountain striving for us.
I am really great full on having this class and having my class mates in open conversations feeling comfortable on speaking out our minds.
